Life at Nalanda

Our campus is located in Bylakkupe, India; about 155 miles southwest of Bangalore. Bylakuppe is the largest Tibetan settlement in India and houses the largest community of Tibetans outside of Tibet.

The campus contains a main temple, administrative offices and classrooms, dormitories, kitchen and dining room for 300 monks aged 5 year upwards to monks of advanced age. The monks are solely responsible for the welfare of the campus surroundings

The foundation of our philosophy is placing the needs of others before our own for the benefit of society. Training is rigorous and emphasizes hands-on learning and the insights gained from direct experience rather than theoretical learning and intellectual understanding.

We utilise yoga and tai chi to improve focus and well-being as well as team sports such as soccer to develop teamwork and leadership skills. Our curriculum includes Environmental technology, courses in buddhist philosophy, meditation, thangpa painting as well as learning languages such as Tibetan, English, South East Asian Languages and Kannada (the local language of the state of Karnataka).

As a result of comprehesive, integrated studies, our monks become living examples of our vision.
